I grew up in the city of the Philippines eating normal and bad food. I really don’t know what are they made of, ingredients or where they are from. No one in the family seems to really care about health. People mostly eat what they want whenever they want.
Street foods, mini grocery store (tindahan), retail food store, food court and free food if you go to visit your relatives. It’s a lot of choices but we don’t really think what are they and if they are good for you.
I moved to Canada several years ago, in the island of Victoria BC where there is so much agricultural land, health food store and farmers market. I didn’t really care when I first started living here.
Three years ago, I suffered of depression and I do not really like what I’m feeling inside my body and what I look like. I gained weight, don’t really care about working out and my eating is just only filipino food with a lot of grains, salty foods and noodles.
I decided to make changes, with people surrounded me that are healthy both young and old people. It was inspiring that I learned how to be able to decided on what is healthier choices.
I started very slow and have amazing result. I cut eating rice from nothing into one or twice in a month, a lot of veggies instead of meat, fruits and support locally farmer’s market.
It is such a big and fun stage of my life. Our house is surrounded with farmer’s market and I love it so much from eggs to veggies and flowers even pumpkin for halloween, it’s so cool.
But one day, I did tell myself and realized how much backyard we have it’s time to make some plant boxes and started planning.
I have amazing friend/gardener who really threw so much effort in planting and growing my garden and her name is Trish. We grew so much tomatoes that my dog loves to eat, chard which are amazing for smoothie, peas, cucumbers and squash oh wait, and there is a lot more.
Now it’s winter time we have kales, cabbages more chard and lettuce.
It’s one of the best thing I did and change in my life. People are right changes is always thru you.
